Agentive AI is technology that does work on a person's behalf: you delegate a task, it acts for you, and you stay in charge of the outcome. Agentic AI describes a system's degree of autonomy: its ability to plan, use tools and carry out multi-step work toward a goal. The two are not opposites. Agentic describes what the system can do; agentive describes who it works for and who keeps control.
Where the word agentive comes from
The term was popularized by the designer Christopher Noessel in his 2017 book Designing Agentive Technology. He used it for products that act directly for their users, as opposed to assistive tools that only help a person do a task faster. A spell-checker is assistive. A system that watches for a condition and handles it for you, within limits you set, is agentive.
Agentic is the newer word. It spread with large language models and AI agents, and it describes systems that decide their own next steps: break a goal into tasks, call tools, check results and adjust.
The difference at a glance
| Agentic AI | Agentive AI | |
|---|---|---|
| The question | How much can the system do on its own? | On whose behalf does it act, and who decides? |
| Focus | Planning, tool use, multi-step execution | Delegation, oversight, the relationship with the person |
| Typical risk | Autonomy without accountability | A narrow tool relabeled as an agent |
| In a sales team | An agent researches an account across ten sources and drafts a plan | That plan waits for the seller to review, edit or approve before anything is sent |
Why the distinction matters for business software
In revenue work, the most useful systems are both. They need agentic capability to do real account work: research, map the people in a deal, prepare a brief or a business case. And they need an agentive design so a person keeps the decisions that carry risk: what is sent, to whom and when.
Autonomy alone tends to produce activity nobody asked for. Delegation alone tends to produce a task list. The value sits where the system does the work and the person makes the call.
Agentive, the company
Agentive (beagentive.com) is the agentic revenue platform for enterprise sales teams. The name reflects both ideas: twelve specialized AI agents do the account work, from defining the market to preparing each conversation, and the seller approves every consequential move. It builds a Buying Group Graph for each deal so the team sees everyone who shapes the decision, including the buyers they have not met yet.
Several other companies and projects use the name Agentive. This page and beagentive.com refer to the revenue platform.
