What are AI sales agents, and what can they actually do?
AI sales agents are software workers that take on defined parts of the account motion: researching an account, mapping the buying group, building a business case, drafting role-specific outreach, preparing a pre-call brief. Useful ones prepare work and hand it to a seller for approval. They are not autonomous closers, and treating them as such is how teams damage accounts.
What agents do well today
- Reading a large volume of account material and summarizing what changed.
- Finding people who belong in the buying group and are missing from the CRM.
- Assembling a first draft: business case, value hypothesis, call plan, follow-up.
- Personalizing at the level of a role and a priority rather than a merge field.
- Keeping records current, so the pipeline reflects reality.
What they should not do unsupervised
- Send anything to a customer without a person reading it.
- Change a forecast, a price or a commitment.
- Decide account strategy in place of the seller.
Questions worth asking a vendor
- What context does the agent read, and where does that context live?
- What exactly does the seller approve, and can approval be turned off?
- Does work on one account improve the next, or does each run start cold?
- How does output get back into the CRM and the engagement tools?
- What happens when the agent is wrong, and how is that visible?
